Searching the internet can sometimes be as difficult as finding that needle in a haystack. In other words, finding a good website relevant to what the user is searching for can be a challenge. There are some tricks that can be used to help search engines bring back the best results.
Entering all relevant keywords will help to bring back websites that contain those words. More keywords in the search bar will narrow the results. For example, the keywords “truck for sale” would not be the best keywords to use as they would bring back millions of results that would not be needed. However, typing “truck for sale new york” would be much more targeted.
Typing the keywords inside quotations will bring back only the results that have all of those keywords exactly as written. This can bring back much more relevant results.
Leave Out Unnecessary Words
When typing a query into a search engine, words like “a”, “the”, “in” and others that are similar, do not need to be included. It is best to use only the main keywords, and in fact, some search engines will ignore those words anyway. For example, in the case of “hotels orlando”, it does not need to have the “in” added. It will just slow down the results, and sometimes cause unrelated results.
Using Advanced Search
Most search engines, such as Google, Yahoo and Bing will have an option to allow for an advanced search. Yet, there are not many people who take advantage of this feature, which can bring back much more relevant results.
Some search engines make use of what are called Boolean commands, which are the words “AND”, “OR” and “NOT”. Putting these commands along with the keywords will filter and bring back the closest results possible. For example, putting “red purse” AND “free shipping”, the results will only show the sites that have those two sets of terms. The other commands work the same way.
Learning to search the internet more effectively can ease some of the search engine frustration that many users experience.
